For independent game developers across Africa, the next big level may come with more than digital trophies and leaderboard bragging rights.
Google Play has officially announced the launch of its 2026 Indie Games Fund in Africa, a $1 million initiative designed to support 10 promising independent game studios across Sub-Saharan Africa.
The programme aims to address one of the most stubborn obstacles facing African game developers: access to investment. While the continent continues to produce talented creators, compelling stories and increasingly ambitious games, many studios still struggle to secure the funding needed to expand their teams, improve their products and compete internationally.
Through the fund, selected studios will receive between $50,000 and $200,000 in non-dilutive funding. This means the developers can receive financial support without surrendering ownership or equity in their companies. In gaming language, Google is offering an important power-up without demanding control of the console.
The support will extend beyond money. Successful applicants will also receive dedicated mentorship and hands-on technical assistance from the Google Play team. This is expected to help participating studios strengthen their businesses, improve game performance and position their products for a broader global audience.
The fund is open to independent game development companies operating in Sub-Saharan Africa with fewer than 50 employees. Applicants must also have already released at least one game, whether on mobile, PC or console.
The initiative comes at a time when Africa’s gaming ecosystem is gaining international attention, driven by a young digital population, expanding smartphone access and developers creating games inspired by local cultures, experiences and storytelling traditions.
For studios that have already launched a game but need additional resources to reach the next stage, the 2026 Indie Games Fund could provide both the capital and expert support required to scale.
